The first few minutes after a water loss are about safety, stopping additional water, and preserving information about the condition of the property.

Protect people first. Keep occupants away from electrical hazards, contaminated water, and ceilings that appear wet or unstable.
Stop the water source if it can be done safely. This may mean shutting off a fixture valve, appliance supply, or the home's main water valve.
Move valuables, electronics, furniture, and dry contents away from the affected area when safe.
Photograph and video the affected rooms, source area, wet materials, and damaged contents before significant cleanup.
Contact a qualified restoration professional when water has entered flooring, drywall, insulation, cabinets, framing, or multiple rooms.
What not to do
Do not enter standing water where electrical hazards may be present.
Do not use ordinary household fans on sewage or contaminated-water losses.
Do not assume materials are dry just because the surface feels dry.
